Level of Lagoa dos Patos in RS exceeds historical record from 1941 and region is on alert

The level of Lagoa dos Patos, in Rio Grande do Sul, reached a new record, surpassing the historical mark established during the 1941 floods. According to a bulletin issued by Rio Grande city hall on Friday night (10), the level reached 2.36 meters, representing 1.56 meters above normal.

This current elevation represents an increase of 31 centimeters over the previous record of 2.05 meters. According to the most recent data from the National Water Agency (ANA), updated this morning, three other stations monitored in the region recorded the following levels:

  • Arambaré: 2.49 meters
  • Orange grove: 2.48 meters
  • St. Lawrence: 2.45 meters

The Hydraulic Research Institute of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) prepared maps of areas at risk from flooding resulting from this sudden increase in Lagoa dos Patos.

Municipalities such as Pelotas, São Lourenço do Sul, Rio Grande and others located on the banks of Lagoa dos Patos may face impacts from this increase. At least two more cities that are not part of the metropolitan region are shown on the map: Pareci Novo and Barra do Ribeiro.

The interconnection between Lagoa dos Patos and Guaíba, which recently recorded a historic level of 5.33 meters, further increases concerns. The forecast is that large rivers that cross the state, such as the Taquari, Jacuí and Sinos, will flow into the region.

This Friday, during a press conference, Governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) appealed to people who live in risk areas not to return to the regions that were evacuated.

“Regarding the rains over the next few days, the likely consequence is a repeat of what we saw happen in the last few days and weeks. In other words, rivers that have already been affected, such as Taquari and Jacuí, later with the contribution here to Guaíba and the metropolitan region. There is also a risk of landslides in places where the ground is wet”, warned Leite.
