Hopes for finding the five missing alive at the waste processing plant in Leverkusen, where a powerful explosion took place yesterday, are now negligible, according to the owner company, Currenta. So far, two people have been pulled out dead and 31 injured – one of them seriously.
“Unfortunately, we have to assume that we will not find the five missing persons alive,” said Frank Hildmar, CEO of the company. A tank with chlorinated solvents exploded at his company’s facilities in the Leverkusen Chemical Park yesterday morning. Due to the dense black cloud that emerged from the spot, the authorities asked the citizens to stay for several hours in their homes with the windows closed, while the playgrounds in the area remained out of order. The North Rhine-Westphalia state environmental agency said in a statement that most of the dioxins, PCBs and furan were released after the explosion, but did not know exactly at what concentration. Research on air and soil quality is ongoing.
The Fire Department also announced that the search for the missing continues with the use of drones, however the situation remains extremely difficult due to the high temperatures that have developed at the site. “It will take some time for the situation to become clear,” Leverkusen Fire Chief Herman Greven told Southwestern Germany (SWR2).
