LGBT+ parade in RJ takes place this Sunday (27)

The 27th edition of the Rio LGBTI+ Pride Parade takes place this Sunday (27). The traditional event will have ten electric trios with simultaneous programs with the theme “Courage to be happy”. According to the sociocultural director of Grupo Arco-Íris de Cidadania LGBT, Júlio Moreira, the theme is an invitation for everyone to look to the future with optimism, even in the face of a country that kills the most LGBTQIAPN+ people in the world.

“We live every day in fear, not only because of the incitement to violence. We understand that we need to work on our population’s self-esteem, because even living with the prejudice that kills, we survive. We have to have the courage to be happy and live day to day, ”she says.

In Brazil, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics – IBGE, 2.9 million people aged 18 or over declare themselves lesbian, gay or bisexual. Data are from the National Health Survey – PNS: self-identified sexual orientation of the adult population.

The sociocultural director of Grupo Arco-Íris de Cidadania LGBT explains that the organization was very concerned with the return of the event in person. “We will have ten Military Police observation towers precisely for the protection of participants, even though the parade is a very peaceful event”, he says.

Between January and June of this year, Brazil has already recorded 135 deaths of LGBT+ people, according to a survey by the Gay Group of Bahia – GGB. Data were collected from newspapers and digital portals. In 2021, 168 deaths were recorded, showing a 20% drop over the same period.

Plurality in the 27th edition

The wings of the ten electric trios will reinforce the importance of preserving the Amazon and the Environment. They will also pay tribute to the victims of Covid-19 and those who acted on the front lines. The event will exalt individual freedoms and raise public awareness about LGBTphobia.

“We will have the participation of transaffective families, with LGBT+ parents and mothers. We will have conversation circles to welcome these parents of transgender children and adolescents, who often do not know how to deal with this discussion”, he concludes.

The Rio LGBTI Pride Parade, organized for 27 years by the NGO Grupo Arco-Íris de Cidadania LGBT, takes place this Sunday (27), starting at 11am, at Posto 5 on Copacabana beach.
