Tortured and strangled. He would have been killed like this Edwin Chiloba, well-known Kenyan LGBTQ+ activist, model and designer. He was 25 years old and his lifeless body was found on Wednesday 4 January in a metal crate, abandoned along a road 40 km from the city of Eldoret, in the Rift Valley, Kenya.

It’s not easy to expose yourself in a country, Kenya, where homosexuality is not only considered something to be kept indoors but above all it is considered illegal. Sexual relations between persons of the same sex are in fact punishable by law, with sentences of up to 14 years in prison. Just four months ago, according to the news site Nairobi News Chiloba had been attacked by strangers and beaten. He had managed to save himself, suffering wounds and bruises on his body.
A suspect has currently been arrested for the murder of the young activist, it would be a close friend, according to reports from the police who are investigating the murder and are trying to trace the people who were seen loading a metal crate in a car to the victim’s home.
«It is truly worrying that we continue to witness an escalation of violence against LGBTQ+ Kenyans», commented on its Facebook page the Khrc, a non-governmental organization that fights to establish a culture of human rights and democracy in Kenya by monitoring violations of the rights themselves. “It is reprehensible and deeply unfair. Every day, the human rights of LGBTQ+ people are violated with little consequence for those responsible.” Furthermore, the association urged the police to do justice quickly, recalling the murder, which took place last year, of another activist for the rights of the Lgbtq+ community, Sheila Lumumba.
