Lgbtqi+ rights, because the European Parliament has condemned Italy

“Concern about the current global anti-rights, anti-gender and anti-Lgbtiq rhetorical movements, fueled by some political and religious leaders around the world, including in the EU”. This is expressed by the European Parliament in a resolution on the “universal decriminalization of homosexuality, in the light of recent developments in Uganda”. The EU countries mentioned are Poland, Hungary (already condemned in the past for these issues) and Italy. These are the countries that put i at risk LGBTQI+ rights.

In particular, amendment 19 presented by the Greens and the Left was approved, which «strongly condemns the dissemination of such rhetoric by some influential political leaders and governments in the EU, as in the case of Hungary, Poland and Italy». The entire resolution was presented by Populars, Socialists, Liberals, Greens and the Left and adopted with 416 votes in favour, 62 against and 36 abstentions. The EPP is in favour, Lega and Fratelli d’Italia are against the resolution, Forza Italia abstained with two MEPs voting against. The amendment in particular was approved with 282 votes in favour, 235 against and 10 abstentions.

The European Parliament explains that movements that do not recognize the rights of LGBTQI+ people “dramatically hamper efforts to achieve universal decriminalization of homosexuality and transgender identity”. They do so because they “legitimize the rhetoric that claims that LGBTIQ people are an ideology rather than human beings.” The issue is spreading to the world because the resolution opposes the Ugandan bill which proposes the death penalty for crimes of homosexuality, life imprisonment or up to 20 years in prison. The European Parliament calls for the universal decriminalization of homosexuality and transgender identity.

A sentence had already arrived from Europe for Italy for the lack of recognition of the rights of homoparental families.
