LGBTQIA+ Parade in SP: organization predicts increased economic impact in the city

After two years of holding virtual events, the Sao Paulo’s LGBTQIA+ Pride Parade reunites the public in person on Avenida Paulista, in the central region of São Paulo.

The size of the stop is measured not only by the volume of people involved, but also by the economic impact.

In 2019, the last year before the Covid-19 pandemic, the LGBTQIA+ Parade generated BRL 403 million in the city’s economy. The estimated audience was 3 million people.

From 2017 to 2019, the number of people who do not live in the capital of São Paulo, but traveled just to enjoy the party reached 43.4% of the total. To have an idea, just with tourism, the movement was R$ 313 million three years ago.

The organization of the parade hopes to move the São Paulo economy even further in 2022. According to Renato Viterbo, vice president of the São Paulo LGBT Parade Association, “about R$500 to 600 million” should be injected into São Paulo’s economy this week. of LGBT Pride.

One factor that increases the impact of the parade is that it is not restricted to Sundays. Fairs, seminars, lectures and other marches precede the event.

“We have about 5,000 jobs directly and indirectly. The part of the hotel business that works, the part of the street vendors, the [rua] 25 de Março, and also some individuals who manage to earn an income from selling drinks along Avenida Paulista and Rua da Consolação”, says Viterbo.

NGOs and associations that help the most vulnerable people in the LGBTQIA+ community are also benefiting from the economic movement around the parade.

“Support, spread the information. Really make this reception, beyond just the movement that we will experience on Sunday at the LGBTQIA+ Parade, the largest in the world. But I say: do this in our daily lives, welcome the other”, comments Beto Silva, coordinator of Casa Florescer.
