Less than 20 days after implementation, the City of São Paulo decided to reduce the duration of Ruas Abertas activities in the Freedom on Sundays and holidays. The decision also reduced the holding of Paulista Aberta by one hour, in Paulista Avenue , also in the central region of São Paulo. The change comes into force this Sunday (22) with the program operating from 9am to 4pm in both locations.
The justification of the Ricardo Nunes (MDB) management is that the measure aims to standardize the program schedule in both spaces, in order to intensify janitorial, cleaning and inspection work. The statement from Subprefecture Sé points out that the decision will “improve the use of public space”.
Open Streets consists of restricting the circulation of motor vehicles on some roads considered leisure, cultural, gastronomic and tourism spots in the city and with a high flow of people. Among the objectives is to ensure greater safety and comfort for pedestrians.
On Sundays, the program receives thousands of people. They include residents of the capital and neighboring cities and also tourists from the interior and other states and countries.
With the change, the closing time of the car circulation restriction in Liberdade was brought forward from 8pm to 4pm. On Avenida Paulista, the start of operation was postponed from 8am to 9am. In other periods, the Paulista Aberta extended until 6pm.
The implementation of Ruas Abertas na Liberdade was resisted by some residents and local businesses. After the first public hearing in a packed auditorium and with mostly critical statements, the proposal was modified, with a reduction in the number of routes covered and opening hours, which would initially be until 10pm. The premiere was on October 1st.

In Liberdade, the program covers Rua dos Aflitos, Rua dos Estudantes (between Avenida da Liberdade and Rua da Glória), Rua Américo de Campos (from Rua Galvão Bueno and Rua da Glória) and Rua Galvão Bueno ( between Rua dos Estudantes and Rua Américo de Campos).
At the request of part of the commerce and services sector, City Hall is also studying the implementation of Ruas Abertas on Avenida São João. The measure is still under evaluation, with no definition of a possible implementation or dates.
