One hundred and twenty prisoners, members of the Libyan National Army (LNA) of General Khalifa Haftar, who took part in the operation to occupy Tripoli, were released today, as part of the national reconciliation effort in Libya.
The detainees were released at a ceremony organized by the authorities in Zaouia, a town 45 kilometers from Tripoli. Forces from Zawiya have been participating in the defense of the Libyan capital since April 2019.
The Haftar fighters belonged to the 107th Brigade and were captured near Zawiya, at the beginning of the operation against Tripoli.
At their release ceremony, Abdallah Elafi, the vice-president of the Presidential Council, called on all Libyans to “move forward for the reconstruction of the country” and praised “national reconciliation”. After the ceremony, the prisoners were reunited with their families, who were waiting for them there.
Libya is trying to end a decade of conflict and chaos, following the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011. Fighting between the forces of the Government of National Accord (GNA, recognized by the UN, based in Tripoli) and those of General Haftar, the strongman of East Libya, ceased in the summer of 2020. A ceasefire has been in place since October and a new national unity government was formed this month to manage the transitional period until the December parliamentary elections. .
In December and January, the two rival sides exchanged dozens of prisoners of war, based on this ceasefire agreement.
