Libya: Abdulhamid Dbayba will hand over power only to an elected government

The head of Libya’s Government of National Unity, Abdulhamid Dbayba, said on Monday that he would only hand over power to an elected government, effectively ruling out any possibility that he would step down and let the parliament-appointed transitional government under Fathi Batsagha take over.

“We want our stage to be the final transitional phase and we will commit to that, if elections are held then we will hand over power,” Mr Dbayba said during a cabinet meeting in Tripoli.

“The people must vote, choose whoever they want and nominate him to the parliament or the presidency,” the prime minister added.

Since Friday, protests, some of which have been marked by violent incidents, have erupted in several Libyan cities. Protesters say they are fed up with political deadlock, paramilitaries, corruption and the paralysis of basic public services. Demonstrations took place last Sunday night in Tripoli, Misrata and Bani Walid (west). They followed angry citizens storming the parliament building in the eastern city of Tobruk and setting part of it on fire on Friday.

The participants in the demonstrations also demand an end to the daily, long-hour electricity cuts in the middle of the heat and a reduction in the prices of basic food goods.

Chaos continues to reign in north Africa’s largest hydrocarbon-rich country since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011. Since March, two governments have again vied for power, one in UN-recognised Tripoli under Mr. .Dbayba, which took over in 2021, the other in eastern Libya, under Fathi Batsaga, who is supported by Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
