Fati Basaga, the prime minister of the parallel government appointed by the Libyan parliament, arrived in the capital Tripoli today, Al Arabiya television reported, citing the interior minister of his government.
The Libyan parliament, which is based in the eastern part of the country, named Mr Basagas as the new prime minister in March. But Abdulhamid al-Dhaiba, who took office last year, refused to relinquish power, sparking another long-running dispute between the two parallel governments.
According to Issam Abu Zariba, the government’s interior minister named by parliament, “the Libyan government will now take up its duties in the capital, Tripoli.” He added that his services were not intended to prosecute members of Mr Dhaiba’s government for political reasons.
Mr Basaga has repeatedly tried to consolidate his government in Tripoli, but to date Mr Dbaiba has refused to do so.
