Libya: Military court sentences Haftar to death – New appeal for his arrest

A permanent military tribunal in Misrata has sentenced Khalifa Haftar to death in absentia on Thursday for bombing Misrata Air Defense College in 2019 and killing a Libyan Army soldier following airstrikes by US-led forces.

The military prosecutor’s office in Misrata said the death sentence also applied to other commanders acting on Haftar’s behalf, adding that the sentence deprived these commanders and Haftar of their civil rights and exempted them from military service.

Meanwhile, the Military Prosecutor called earlier with a new official order from Deputy Prosecutor Mohamed Garouda to execute the Haftar arrest warrant, issued a few days ago, for five cases and violations of martial law in 2019 and 2020.

“Haftar is a Libyan Army officer and has submitted his presidential candidacy to the Supreme National Electoral Commission, so the law says that any soldier who trades with political parties or participates in a political entity or election campaign is subject to imprisonment for no more than five years.” said Garuda.

Seventy-three candidates were nominated by the National High Electoral Commission on Wednesday as preliminary candidates to run in the Dec. 24 vote, including Haftar, 25-year-old Parliament Speaker Agila Saleh and incumbent Prime Minister Alebib al-Bin. including Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and Nuri Abu Samine.
