A Libyan press photographer, who was arrested in 2018 in the city of Ajabiya, in the east of the country, and sentenced to 15 years in prison by a military court, was released from the forces of General Khalifa Haftar, as it became known today from official sources.
Ismail Abuzreiba el-Zouai was released after being granted “special amnesty by the general command of the armed forces” controlled by the powerful man of eastern Libya, a source in the military prosecutor’s office in Benghazi said.
Zhuay was released from prison late Saturday night.
Hannah Salah, a researcher with the non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch Libya, hailed the photojournalist’s release, saying it was “delayed” after three years of “arbitrary detention”.
Zui was arrested in 2018 in Ajabiya, a city under Haftar control. In May 2020, he was sentenced by a Benghazi military court to 15 years in prison on charges of “communicating with a pro-terrorism TV channel”, the private Alnabaa station, according to a report by HRW last year.
