Libya’s caretaker Prime Minister Abdelhamid Debayba chaired a cabinet meeting today, marking his official return to office after taking a “leave” of office to run in the postponed presidential election.
The political situation is “critical”, Dbeiba commented, as Libya failed to hold presidential elections on December 24, as part of the peace process that began last year under the auspices of the UN.
Due to “unresolved differences”, mainly over the legal framework of the elections, a parliamentary committee ruled last week that the vote was impossible. The Supreme Electoral Commission immediately proposed postponing the January 24 presidential election, but parliament did not take a decision, leaving the matter pending.
The transitional government based in Tripoli is taking advantage of these developments, as its term would theoretically end on December 24. The Tobruk-based parliament is considering a government reshuffle.
Dbeiba, who was running for president although he had vowed not to do so when he took office, defended his government’s work today. “We have worked to restore security and stability,” he said, calling on his ministers to work now “for a strong economic recovery in 2022.”
