Libya: UN continues to support caretaker Prime Minister A. Dbeiba

The convoy carrying Libyan Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dibeba was targeted by gunfire Wednesday night in Tripoli, leaving no one injured, the interior ministry said.

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a rally in the eastern city of Tripoli. The perpetrators were riding in a Toyota Camry car without license plates, the statement said, confirming the information that had been previously transmitted by local and international media.

The ministry spoke of “criminal activity”, stating that an investigation has already been launched.

Libyan media reported earlier that Dibeba’s car came under fire, without specifying whether he was riding in it. A few hours earlier, the caretaker Prime Minister had gone to Martyrs’ Square, in the heart of Tripoli, where he was welcomed by a crowd of supporters.

The UN supports Dbeiba

This afternoon, the Libyan parliament, based in Tobruk, elected the country’s new prime minister, Fati Basaga, the former interior minister. However, UN spokesman Stefan Duzaric said the agency continued to support Dbeiba.

Asked at a daily news conference whether the UN still recognizes Dbeiba as caretaker Prime Minister, the spokesman said: “Yes, in short, yes.”

“Libyan leaders must unite and agree or re-agree on the path they must take,” he added. “We have seen information about the appointment of another prime minister. Our position remains unchanged,” he said, adding that the UN was trying to find out details “about the decision taken by Parliament”.

“The UN is not a colonial ruler or government authority in Libya. We are here and there to help the Libyan people and (…) it is very important for all leaders and parties to keep the Libyan people in mind,” he said.
