Libya’s new prime minister: Turkey’s military presence legal

Libyan Prime Minister-designate Faji Basaga, who has been nominated by the House of Representatives, has said he has a “very strong friendship” with Turkey, despite any attempts to distort it.

The statement was made during an interview on Saturday on the Libyan channel Al Wasat.

Responding to the reason why Turkey has not yet recognized his government, even though Ankara has been a strong supporter of him in all previous political stages, Basaga replied:

“My relationship with Turkey is strong, with a very strong friendship.” He continued: “But there are some parties that are trying to distort my position to confuse this relationship, but our relationship with the Turkish state has never been affected and is still good.”

“Members of the Libyan parliament from the east and other political elites offered to go to Turkey to clarify matters, and the sons of Khalifa Haftar, who are Saddam and al-Siddiq, went,” he said. “In Turkey to clarify things. There are issues and now they are preparing to go to Qatar to clarify them.”

“It was built in difficult times”

Basaga added that his relationship with Turkey “was built in difficult times and will not change in any case”.

Libya is suffering from a state of political division following the approval by the House of Representatives in Tobruk (east) of Fatih Bashaga as head of a new government, led by a national unity government led by Abdul Hamid al-Dhabi. to Basaga and claims that he will hand it over to a government that will come from a newly elected parliament.

Basaga also accused Debaeba of not keeping his promise not to run in the election, saying it was one of the main reasons he was canceled last December.

He continued, stressing that “Dbeiba did not intend to hold elections and even from the beginning informed the external and internal parties that his rule will last two or more years and there will be no elections.”

Dibeba bases his government on the basis of the Political Dialogue Forum, which set the transitional executive’s term at 18 months, extending it until June 24.

Turkey is in contact with various Libyan parties to help find a political solution and a way out of the crisis.

Relations with Egypt and the USA

In his interview, Bashaga outlined the positions of other countries in the light of the political division that Libya sees, saying that “Egypt did not interfere in the formation of my government, contrary to what is rumored, and what moves Cairo is its national security, which is part of Libya’s national security “.

He said he had received “very positive official and unofficial messages from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates about his government”.

As for relations with the United States, Basaga said “they will be further strengthened in the near future.”

The foreign military presence

Regarding the non-Libyan forces present in his country, he said:

“We reject the presence of any force that opposes Libyan sovereignty. As for the Turkish forces, they came under a formal agreement between Libya and Turkey. For other powers, such as the Russian Wagner, we will look into it.”
