Roscosmos hosted a meeting of the Presidium of the Scientific and Technical Council on the further operation of the International Space Station after 2024.

Life after the ISS: Roscosmos plans to build a ROSS station

Completion of operation is planned by 2028. Nevertheless, as the press service of Roscosmos notes, due to the aging of a significant part of the station’s equipment, the further operation of the Russian segment of the ISS after 2024 creates additional risks.

To avoid interruptions in the development of near-earth space, it is planned to create a national manned space complex in low earth orbit – the Russian Orbital Service Station (ROSS).

Roscosmos explains:

Created with the use of new technologies, ROSS should become an evolutionary step in the development of a program for the study and development of the Moon, flights to Mars and the implementation of innovative scientific and technical programs in space. “

At the meeting, Roscosmos was advised to start the technical study of the design of the new orbital station ROSS – as part of the ISS or as an independent national station, including the development of a draft design of the station in the Federal Space Program for 2025.

Initially, the ISS was planned to operate “at least” until 2020, in 2015 Roscosmos and NASA agreed to extend the service life until 2024, then negotiations began to extend the service life until 2028 or 2030.
