Life expectancy in 2020 decreased by 1.84 years compared to 2019, TASS reports, citing data from the Russian Ministry of Health, according to APE.
In 2019 the life expectancy was 73.34 years, while in 2020 this index fell to 71.5 years.
The overall mortality of the population last year, according to the report of the Russian Ministry of Health increased by 17.9%, reaching 14.5 people per 1000 inhabitants, while in 2019 this index was 12.3 people per 1000 inhabitants.
A report by the Russian Ministry of Health states that “increased mortality is due to the impact of the new coronavirus pandemic, which has been one of the biggest challenges for the health system in the last hundred years.”
Earlier, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova said that a large part of the increase in mortality was due to deaths due to coronavirus. Mortality in Russia in March 2021, according to the latest data from the Russian Statistical Service (Rostat), decreased by 14% compared to January 2021.
The report of the Ministry of Health points out that it is necessary to ensure a steady increase in population and an increase in life expectancy to 78 years by 2030.
