Life expectancy of Brazilians drops to 75.5 years after pandemic, says IBGE

The average life expectancy of a Brazilian in 2022 was 75.5 years, according to data released this Wednesday morning (29) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

For men, the expectation was 72 years old, while for women it was 79 years old last year.

This indicator has fallen since 2019 as a reflection of the increase in deaths related to the Covid-19 pandemic, explained IBGE. In 2019, a Brazilian had a life expectancy of 76.2 years.

Therefore, it is expected that a baby born in 2022 could live, on average, 75.5 years, if they face the same levels of mortality experienced by the population of Brazil last year.

The numbers appear in the 2022 Mortality Table, released today (29) by the institute. The indicators are published annually with data referring to the previous year.

Child mortality

In the year 2022, the probability of a newborn not reaching a full year of life was 12.9 for every thousand births. In the case of boys, the proportion increases to 13.9 and remains at 11.7 for female babies.

Life expectancy at age 60

A Brazilian aged 60 in 2022 could expect to live another 21.9 years. In this case there is also a differentiation between men and women. Brazilian women who were 60 years old last year were expected to live another 23.5 years, while the number was 20 years for men in this age group.

Life expectancy has increased over the decades

A Brazilian born in 1940 was expected to live 45.5 years following the mortality levels at the time. There was a 30-year increase in the indicator in just over 80 years.

In 1960, the life expectancy of Brazilians exceeded 50 years. A baby born that year was expected to live for 52.5 years.

The life expectancy of Brazilians reached 73.9 years in 2010.
