Life is almost normal in Kiev, says Ukrainian professor at USP

University of São Paulo professor Kostiantyn Iusenko, who is in Kiev, said the “situation has improved a lot” after three months of war in Ukraine.

In an interview with CNN Radio , he said that the battles are located in the eastern region. “Life has pretty much normalized, many people have returned to Kiev, there are shops operating to buy food, there are alarms, but life is almost normal.”

“We don’t have Russian soldiers on the streets, there are already children on the streets,” he added.

Kostiantyn’s wife, Nataliia Goloshchapova, who also works at USP, managed to return to Brazil. He, however, was barred due to the martial law in force in the country, which was extended until the end of August.

He does not know when he will be able to return to Brazil as his naturalization process, which was ongoing, was initially rejected. “Unless there are more easings, even after August I should not be able to return.”

Kostiantyn and Nataliia traveled to Ukraine over Christmas last year to visit family members, but were surprised twice, first by the diagnosis of Covid-19 and then by the war.
