One person died and seven others were injured after being struck by lightning in the municipality of Praia Grande, on the south coast of São Paulo, on Saturday afternoon (20). Despite warnings from authorities, the beaches were crowded this weekend.
According to information from the region's Marine Fire Brigade, lightning struck four people on Caiçara beach. One of the victims, a 60-year-old woman, went into cardiac arrest and had to receive lifeguard care while still on the sand.
She was taken to the emergency room with a possible brain injury, but she did not survive.
Of the other three victims on Caiçara beach, a 15-year-old teenager and two adults, aged 31 and 38, were taken to the central emergency room and remain hospitalized and stable. They were all tourists from Francisco Morato.
The fire department also reported other cases of lightning assistance: SAMU helped two victims, while the 6th group from Praia Grande handled two more. There is still no information about the relationship between these other four victims and the lightning strike on Caiçara beach.
Civil defense warns of storms
The coast of São Paulo has been on alert for storms since yesterday afternoon (19), according to the state's Civil Defense. An accumulated 180mm of rain is expected throughout the weekend.
The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) also issued a danger warning for storms that are expected to hit the interior, capital and coast of São Paulo. Strong gusts of wind may also occur until at least Sunday (21).
