The doubling of lignite production in order to deal with the consequences of the energy crisis and the possible interruption of the flow of Russian gas was decided yesterday by the government during the meeting held on energy.
Specifically, as mentioned during the meeting, lignite production from 5TWh will increase to 10TWh and will reach 20% of domestic energy consumption.
In this context, PPC is proceeding with a significant increase in investments in the mining sector. In fact, information indicates that investments and interventions will be made even for the private mines of Achlada and Vevi.
According to competent sources, the increase in lignite production at the current time is highly beneficial as it leads to a limitation of imports of expensive natural gas and thus improves the country’s trade balance.
Finally, it is worth noting that according to information there is already a significant increase in the use of lignite in the energy balance of the country. In June, PPC’s energy mix was 45.9% natural gas, 34.6% lignite and 21.8% hydroelectric, while a month before May, lignite had a 19.9% share in PPC’s mix.
