Lignites continue to normally supply the electrical system

The operation of lignite plants, which contribute daily to meet the demand for electricity, continues normally.

In fact, for today, a significant part of the demand is planned to be covered by the lignite units of the electrical system.

Nevertheless, the explosion of the price of natural gas leads again upwards the prices that today are expected to exceed 400 euros / MWh.

More specifically, for today, according to the planning published by IPTO, the Agios Dimitrios 1,2,4,5 units, the Megalopolis 4 unit as well as the Meliti unit are expected to operate.

That is, lignite production appears increased and represents over 20% of the total daily demand of 145,535 GWh.

It is worth noting that in January lignite production covered 10.5% of the system’s energy needs as the lignite plants produced a total of 509GWh of electricity.

In fact, the issue of the energy mix was raised on the table during the recent meeting held on Saturday at the Maximos Palace with the participation of the Minister of Environment and Energy K. Skrekas.

As it was found in the short term, no other adjustment is required as on the one hand there is sufficient to meet the demand, on the other hand not all the power plants of the system are available, including the lignites that normally participate in the market.

The operation of the lignite plants, however, does not prevent the explosion of prices in the wholesale market. Thus for today it is predicted that the price of electricity will reach record levels of 426.9 euros / MWh.

In fact, the Greek price is the third lowest in Europe, behind only Poland (171.9 euros / MWh and Bulgaria (429.29 euros / MWh), the highest price is recorded in Italy (594.83 euros / MWh), followed by Switzerland (574.54 euros / MWh), Croatia and Slovenia (561.96 euros / MWh) and Spain (544.98 euros / MWh).

The new records in the price of electricity come as a result of the explosion in the price of natural gas that yesterday reached up to 345 euros / MWh, recording a new record high, for fear of the interruption of the flow of Russian gas due to the Ukrainian.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that today announcements are expected from the European Commission, on energy and on the revision of the toolkit to deal with the energy crisis and the price explosion that threatens households and businesses across Europe.
