Like the movies: Acer unveils technology that brings 3D content outside of laptop screens

You can now see the image in 3D using special virtual / mixed reality glasses (for example, Microsoft HoloLens) or using augmented reality (AR) technology, which allows, for example, using an iPhone or iPad with a LiDAR sensor. Acer showed a completely different concept, in which special glasses are not required to see a three-dimensional object in true 3D, and not on a computer screen.

SpatialLabs uses advanced eye tracking technology, stereoscopic 2D / 3D display and real-time rendering technology. This allows you to immerse yourself in the world of stereoscopic 3D without additional accessories. In other words, Acer’s new technology allows you to see a 3D image outside the computer screen, but it only works on new ConceptD laptops. The technology isn’t likely to hit consumer devices anytime soon, but it looks pretty damn cool. This is what has always been the fantasy of filmmakers.

According to the company, SpatialLabs is a set of capabilities that are based on advanced optical solutions. A combination of three things is used to create a 3D model. The laptop has a stereo camera with two sensors that tracks the position of the eyes and head. At the top of the display is an optical lens through which images for each eye are projected. In addition, real-time rendering technology allows you to rotate and move 3D models in certain applications.

SpatialLabs technology is compatible with the most popular 3D image processing programs such as Maya or Blender, as well as the Unreal Engine. The range of applications is extremely large – from computer graphics to advanced educational or medical software. Particularly impressive is the SpatialLabs Player, in which you can play videos in stereoscopic 3D and seamlessly switch between 3D and 2D modes.
