Limits on free speech will be tested after Elon Musk takes over Twitter

Within hours of Elon Musk ushering in a new era on Twitter, the billionaire was inundated with requests and demands from banned account holders and world leaders.

The barrage of requests underscores the challenge the Tesla chief executive faces, balancing a pledge to restore free speech and prevent the platform from descending into a “hellish landscape,” as he promised in an open letter to advertisers on Thursday. fair (27).

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who was permanently banned from the social network for inciting violence following the January 6, 2021, capitol invasion, welcomed the takeover but said little about a return to his profile.

“I am very happy that Twitter is now in sensible hands and will no longer be run by Radical Left Lunatics and Maniacs who truly hate our country.”

Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and current vice president of the Russian Security Council, tweeted his congratulations: “Good luck @elonmusk in overcoming political bias and ideological dictatorship on Twitter. And get out of this Starlink Ukraine business,” referring to the internet financing in Ukraine by Musk’s company.

Others urged Musk to reverse penalties inflicted by the social media platform. In response to an anonymous account with 852,000 followers, known to be a huge supporter of Trump’s election fraud allegations, which said it was “banned”, Musk responded that he would “do more research today”.

“Hey @elonMusk, now that you own Twitter, will you help fight Trudeau C-11’s online censorship law?” wrote on the platform to Canada Proud, an organization working to remove Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“First I heard,” Musk replied in a tweet on Friday (28).

Pressure is mounting on Musk and on Twitter, as he is expected to address the company’s staff on Friday after closing the deal.

Musk didn’t give details on how he’s going to achieve all this and who will run the company. He said he plans to cut jobs, leaving the social media platform’s 7,500 employees worried about the future.

He tried to allay Twitter employees’ fears that big layoffs are coming and assured advertisers that their earlier criticism of Twitter’s content moderation rules wouldn’t detract from its appeal.

Twitter, Musk and executives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
