Lina Mendoni’s visit to Australia – Contacts with government officials

The Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni, who is paying a visit to Australia today, Easter Monday, attended the established ceremony of Anzac Day, the national holiday of Australia, which is dedicated to the memory of the victims of all wars. During the event, he had a conversation with the Prime Minister of the State of New South Wales Dominic Perrottet about the role played by Lemnos during the First World War.

According to a relevant announcement, the presence of the minister in the festive events of Anzac Day is of special importance, as the implementation of the Open Air Museum program begins in Lemnos, which aims to highlight the important role of Lemnos as a base for the campaign, camping, the supply, medical care and rest of the Australian and New Zealand troops. The program includes the erection of a monument in honor of the ANZAC and their contribution to the First World War, the creation of routes, special signs and information points in the historic site of Lemnos, where the allied cemeteries are located. The program will be implemented with funding from the Veterans Ministry of the Australian Government, in the framework of a Memorandum of Cooperation signed with the Greek Ministry of National Defense. As the area is declared a historic site, the Ministry of Culture and Sports cooperates in the program, as it has direct responsibility.

Lina Mendoni then had a meeting with the Minister of Culture of New South Wales Ben Franklin, in charge of Culture. The subject of the meeting, which took place in a very warm climate, was the development of cooperation in the field of Culture between the two countries, both in the field of cultural heritage and in contemporary culture. Special mention, during the meeting, was made in the preparation of a bilateral agreement between Greece and Australia on tackling the illicit trafficking of cultural goods, an area of ​​particular interest for Australia as well.

The Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni attended the Liturgy of the Resurrection, officiated by the Archbishop of Australia Makarios, at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Resurrection, in the Kogarah area of ​​Sydney. The ceremony was also attended by the Federal Prime Minister of Australia Scott Morisson, with whom Lina Mendoni had a short conversation. The Minister, together with Archbishop Makarios, lit a candle for the tried – because of the irrational, unjust and needless war – people of Ukraine, to whom Lina Mendoni made special reference and to the greeting, which was addressed to the thousands of expatriates who attended. function of the Resurrection.

On Easter Sunday, in a special ceremony held in the hall of the School of Theology, Archbishop Makarios decorated the Minister of Culture and Sports with the Order of the Pro-Christ with a Star of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia, for the Ascension of the cultural heritage of Greece, and mainly of the religious one.
