LinkedIn pulled out of China and young people are looking for jobs through Tinder

Young professionals in China have found a different way to display their resumes while looking for work, after the popular platform left LinkedIn from the country. The new job-hunting site is Tinder, according to Chinese Sixth Tone .

It is noted that according to China’s statistical authority, the unemployment rate in the country reached a historic high of 21.3% in June. A Peking University graduate told Sixth Tone that dating app Tinder is proving to be professionally useful.

Her online meeting, which ended up on a date, gave her helpful tips on how to secure an internship at a company she worked for. Other young people also reported using the dating app to find job opportunities.

A 22-year-old woman said she had applied for jobs at more than 30 companies in a conventional way, using email and classifieds websites, but to no avail. In her desperation she decided to post photos on Tinder, accompanied by the following message in big red letters: “Anyone looking for an employee?” I am currently looking for a job. Hire me.”

The phenomenon seems to take on important social dimensions. In fact, on other Chinese social networking platforms, tips are posted from user to user on how to find a job through Tinder.

One of these posts states that users should approach people from an industry or business they are interested in, start with general conversations, asking about their job or relationship, for example, and gradually share their work concerns. , before finally seeking their advice on a hire.

However, one A Tinder spokesperson told Sixth Tone that this behavior could violate their platform’s community guidelines.

“Our guidelines reinforce our policy that users should use Tinder to make personal connections, not professional ones,” a spokesperson for the agency said.

“Tinder is not a place to promote businesses to try and make money. Similarly, users should also not advertise, promote or share links to gain followers, sell things, raise funds or run campaigns.’

As it states Insider, it’s not the first time users have taken advantage of a social media app to increase their chances of securing a job. The hashtag #careertok has over 1.7 billion views on TikTok and features videos from creators sharing tips on interview techniques and networking.

In response to its popularity, the app launched the TikTok Resumes pilot program in 2021, partnering with various companies and encouraging users to showcase their skills and experience in the form of a TikTok.
