Linux 5.13 introduces initial support for Apple M1

After two months of development, Linus Torvalds announced the release of the Linux 5.13 kernel. About 800 thousand lines of code were added, about 400 thousand were removed. Accepted 17189 patches from 2150 developers.

Notable changes include initial support for the Apple M1 SoC, which is used in the latest Macs and the iPad Pro (2021). There is currently no GPU support. Porting is handled by the Asahi Linux team, led by Hector Martin, known for porting Linux to the PlayStation 4.

Correlium is also involved in porting Linux to the Apple M1. The company has already launched Ubuntu Desktop and has shared instructions. Photo by Correlium.

Support for Huawei’s EROFS (Enhanced Read-Only File System) file system has been added to the kernel. According to the company’s employees, the performance of EROFS with sequential access is the same in comparison with ext4, but several times higher with random access. The file system is already used in Huawei and Coolpad smartphones.

WiMAX support was removed, the technology was recognized as obsolete, is currently not used in public networks and has been superseded by LTE, HSPA + and Wi-Fi 4 technologies.

Added initial support for AMD FreeSync technology for HDMI, previously it only worked when connected via DisplayPort. In addition, we added support for the Amazon Luna Controller game controller and the Apple Magic Mouse 2.

The source code is available for download at kernel.org. Packages from Canonical are available for Ubuntu 21.04 right now, however they have not been tested and are not intended for end users, it is better to wait for the official update.
