Lionel Messi Promotes Memcoin

Argentine footballer Lionel Messi attracted the attention of the cryptocurrency community with an unexpected story on Instagram* (a social network banned in Russia), in which he advertised the WaterCoin (WATER) memecoin based on Solana.

Celebrity social media accounts have been increasingly hacked in recent times. Now, football legend Lionel Messi, whose Instagram* audience numbers more than 504 million followers, may be in the crosshairs of scammers. However, things are not so clear-cut.

To hack or not to hack – that is the question

On July 8, an unusual story appeared on Messi’s profile – an advertisement for the WATER memecoin. Due to recent celebrity hacks, many immediately assumed that the footballer had been hacked. However, the next day, he did not delete the post and did not leave any comments regarding the fact that his profile had been accessed by intruders.

Some believe Messi may not be aware of the hack as the athlete is preparing to play against Canada in the Copa America.

However, Messi often supports environmental projects, so publishing a story mentioning the WATER “meme” coin could be a sincere move by the footballer.

According to information on the WaterCoin websitethe project aims to raise awareness of water-related issues. WATER’s roadmap includes four stages: a token pre-sale, listing on centralized exchanges (CEX), celebrity partnerships, and turning the asset into a “charity-focused eco-currency.”

What’s wrong with WATER

Some members of the crypto community who do not believe that Messi’s account was hacked are disappointed in the football legend for such a move. They suggestthat WATER was launched by the team behind the creation of the BEER memecoin.

In early June, BEER developers sold their coins for $15 million, thereby bringing down the asset’s price.

“Messi just unveiled a paid sponsored Instagram post* promoting a memecoin created by a Dubai-based scam group to his 500 million followers. Damn, this man was my idol,” wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter).

According to the analytical blockchain platform Bubblemapsinsiders control 30% of the WATER supply. However, this information had almost no effect on the rate of the memecoin, the price of which soared by 147% after Messi’s publication.
