Liposuction is one of the most sought after aesthetic procedures by those who want to reshape the body and eliminate those localized fat. However, one of the most common misconceptions about this procedure is to believe that it serves to lose weight.
Experts heard by the report of CNN They explain that although lipo removes fat, the amount removed is not sufficient to generate significant weight loss. This is because there is a fat limit that can be removed during the procedure and exceeding it can generate serious complications to the patient.
“In liposuction, the fat limit that is considered safe to remove in a single procedure is in the range of 5 to 7% of the patient’s body weight, ie in general, in someone from 70 kg can be removed up to 4.9 liters of fat, without other associated procedures,” explains plastic surgeon Luiza Hassan, specialist in body contour surgery and member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP).
Also according to the expert, the technique removes fat deposits in superficial areas of the body such as abdomen, flanks, thighs and back, providing a more harmonious contour. “But it is not able to reduce deep (visceral) fat and does not replace healthy habits,” Hassan reinforces.
Another myth about liposuction, according to experts, is to state that the procedure offers a definitive result, regardless of the lifestyle that the patient follows after the procedure.
Marcelo Sampaio, plastic surgeon, vice president of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP) warns that, without a balanced diet and an exercise routine, fat can be back and the result obtained in the procedure is lost.
“Having a balanced diet and performing physical activity regularly are essential practices to maintain the results of the procedure,” says Sampaio.
Postoperative risks and care
Despite being a safe procedure, liposuction, like every surgical procedure, is not risky. Hematomas, prolonged swelling and skin irregularities are some of the complications that may occur.
“Postoperatively, it is recommended to use painkillers, dressings and medical follow-up, as well as the prescription of antibiotics if there is need and thrombosis prophylaxis, when indicated. The use of compression strap is also essential to reduce swelling and prevent fluid accumulation. In some cases, the doctor may prescribe lymphatic drainage sessions to minimize edema and improve recovery.” Sampaio.
