The Rio de Janeiro Civil Police will investigate alleged extortion by traffickers, who would be charging a monthly fee so as not to steal or commit other crimes against residents of a building in Madureira, in the north of the state capital. The condominium liquidator summoned an assembly to discuss the payment of a monthly security fee to the neighborhood criminals.
The case was disclosed by BandNews and confirmed by the report of Estadão. The liquidator summoned the condominium meeting for the 13th, having as order of the day “approve monthly payment in the amount of R $ 1,800 for the community of Morro do São José from May/2025”.
The condominium, located on Minister Edgard Romero Avenue, is close to a favela located on this hill, where drug trafficking is dominated by the Pure Command (TCP) criminal faction. Payment of the fee would be the way to guarantee protection to residents, who would be spared from robberies and other crimes.
The Civil Police reported that the Police Station for the Suppression of Organized Criminal Actions and Special Inquiries (Draco) will establish an inquiry to investigate the case, and that the liquidator will be called to testify.
The report tries to talk to the liquidator and other residents of the building.
Police claim to have no record of other extortions against other residences, but the collection of security fee for owners of commercial establishments is common in neighborhoods dominated by criminal or militias factions. In the Serrinha area, of which Morro do São José is part, there are reports of extortion against traders at least since 2020.
