Liz Truss resigned on Thursday after just 44 days as Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party.. She is on course to become the longest-serving government leader in office.
However, a cover of the current issue of The Economist has sparked a backlash from Italy, with its ambassador in London complaining that it uses “the most trivial stereotypes” about his country.
The sketch on the cover of the magazine known for its quirky humor depicts the outgoing British Prime Minister, Liz Truss, in regalia reminiscent of a Roman centurion — helmet, a pizza for a shield (one piece missing), fork with spaghetti instead of a spear in the left hand. Title: “Welcome to Britaly”.
Ambassador Inigo Lambertini tweeted that the magazine was “unfortunately” inspired by “the most trivial stereotypes” about Italy. “Although pasta and pizza are the most sought-after foods in the world, as the second most important industrial country in Europe, on your next cover we would suggest you choose so for a change something from our sectors of aerospace, biotechnology, automotive industry or the pharmaceutical industry,” added the diplomat emphatically.
The weekly British magazine uses Italy in its article more or less as an example to avoid, as it recalls that Ms Truss and her former Finance Minister Kouazi Kwarteng had also done in 2012, referring to the political and economic crisis in the United Kingdom, according to Athenaikos News agency.
“The political instability that used to be a hallmark of Italy has thoroughly infected Britain,” the editorial said, adding that “low growth and subservience to markets” are now also common to the two countries. At the same time the Economist editorial judges that the comparisons are partly inaccurate, citing Italy’s lower performance in terms of productivity and Britain’s lower public debt.
