Do you know the Gullah Geechee? This slave-descendant community maintains its traditions in one of the most beautiful landscapes in the South of the United States.
“It is impossible to talk about the history of the USA without taking into account the fact that this country, like Brazil, was built on a lot of sacrifice and sweat of thousands of Africans who were brought here in the 18th and 19th centuries”, says Pedro Andrade in the episode “The Gullah corridor”, which will air this Sunday (10), at 10:30 pm, on CNN Brasil and on CNN Brasil Soft’s YouTube.
The presenter explains that of the approximately 500,000 Africans who were forcibly brought to the United States, more than half entered the country through a port in South Carolina. “This community contributed a lot to the cultural aspect, to music, to art, to the cuisine that we see today on the American east coast”, he says.
Pedro discovers what this little-known community is like, hears about its history and traditions, tastes its main dishes in the various typical restaurants in the region, learns a little of the Gullah language and much more.
