Lithuania announced today that it was deporting two Belarusian diplomats for “activities incompatible with the status of a diplomat”, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
“Two Belarusian intelligence officers working under the guise of a diplomat have been summoned to leave Lithuania. “No, thank you and goodbye,” Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis added on Twitter.
The Foreign Ministry said a spokesman for the Belarusian embassy had been summoned to protest “the ongoing crackdown on civil society in Belarus and the independent media”.
Landsberkis said the decision was also taken in solidarity with neighboring Baltic Latvia, all of whose embassy staff were deported from Belarus.
Minsk had then accused the Latvian authorities of replacing the Belarusian flag with that of the opposition on the sidelines of the Hockey World Cup. Latvia then deported the Belarusian diplomats.
