Representatives of Lithuania and Turkey signed an agreement in Ankara on Wednesday, paving the way for several countries, and Lithuania to acquire Bayraktar fighter jets.
The country will buy the drone and other equipment with money raised by ordinary Lithuanians and then deliver it to Ukraine, which is fighting the Russians.
The fundraising campaign was launched by journalist Andrius Tapinas and the media channel LaisvÄ—s TV. Raised more than 5 million euros in less than four days.
The Lithuanian government has also said it is considering buying a Bayraktar drone for itself.
A letter of intent for the purchase of Turkish-made weapons was signed by Deputy Defense Minister Vilius Semeška and the head of the Turkish Defense Industry Service, Ismail Demir.
“We have signed an agreement. This gives the green light for further acquisitions at the political level,” SemeÅ¡ka told BNS.
On Thursday, he will meet with the head of Baykar, the manufacturer of Bayraktar, a company of interests of Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s son-in-law, Selcuk Bayraktar.
