Hepatic steatosis, also known as fatty liver, affects one third of the world’s population, according to general surgeon Leonardo Emilio.
Recently, country singer Zezé di Camargo, 60, was diagnosed with the disease.
A CNN Radio in Correspondente Médico, the head of the surgical team at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in Goiânia explained that the condition has “a strong association with obesity and diabetes.”
“When it is expressed, it is a sign of organic manifestation of a large volume of fat in the organism”, he said.
At first, according to the surgeon, this phase is asymptomatic.
“When symptoms manifest, they indicate a more advanced form of the disease, which can progress to an inflammatory condition, this inflamed cell can die, form a scar and the set of scars is liver cirrhosis.”
The treatment is based on the control of risk factors, such as obesity and diabetes, by changing habits.
“Like regular physical activity, from 20 to 40 minutes 3 to 4 times a week, bodybuilding is also important, because it activates the consumption of muscle fat and gives rest to the liver and changes in diet.”
Steatosis is “a sign, an alert, to change behavior”, he said.
