Liver fat raises mortality from diseases that reach other organs

A new study by the Karolinska Institute points out that the mortality rate of people with liver steatosis – fat accumulation in the liver – is almost double the general population. Research also indicates an increased risk of death for diseases that affect other organs.

The researchers analyzed all patients diagnosed with liver fat in Sweden between 2022 and 2020 and compared with a sample field of more than 13,000 patients to analyze the correlation between the disease and different causes of death.

In the study published in The Journal of Hepatologythe team of scientists states that cardiovascular disease mortality rates and nonhepatic cancer is 54% and 47% higher for those who have liver steatosis, respectively. In the case of liver diseases such as liver cancer, the risk of death is up to 35 times higher than the general population.

Axel Wester, assistant professor at the Department of Medicine at the Karolinska Institute and Karolinska University doctor Hospital warns of the silent character of liver fat, which hardly causes symptoms in the early stages.

“Many people do not know they have fatty liver disease,” he says.
