With the her resignation after 44 days in office, Liz Truss she became the shortest-lived prime minister in UK history. Besides, her prime ministerial tenure lasted less than the life of a… lettuce.
The British tabloid newspaper Daily Star staged a peculiar “race” last Friday, live-streaming a lettuce out of the fridge next to a photo of her Liz Trussasking readers: “Can a lettuce out of the fridge outlast Tras’ tenure”?
The tabloid then added a wig, made a face and added…. hands on the vegetable and placed next to it two British flags, a pie on a plate and a red mug bearing the legendary motto “Keep Calm and Carry On‘, which had been used to boost morale in Britain during World War II.
More than 12,000 Twitter users were watching live as Truss announced her resignation outside the Prime Minister’s residence in Downing Street at midday today.
A few moments later, as the number of viewers reached 21,000, “God Save the King” blared as a hand reached across the table and dropped Tras’ photo with the caption: “Lettuce outlived Liz Truss».
The journalistic “trick” of the Daily Star…came from an inspiration from the other end of Britain’s journalistic spectrum. In a column published this week titled “The Iceberg Lady“, the Economist reported that Tras’s political life has “the lifespan of a lettuce.”
Truss’ political role model, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, was widely known as the Iron Lady.
