Liz Truss makes last speech defending her economic plan and tax cut

British Prime Minister Liz Truss made her last speech in office, this Tuesday (25), at around 7:15 am, Brasília time.

Speaking in front of 10 Downing Street, the seat of British government, the shortest-term prime minister in the country’s history defended her controversial economic agenda and tax-cutting strategy.

At the end of the speech, Truss got into a car and traveled by train to Buckingham Palace, to formally resign at a meeting with King Charles III.

“It was a great honor to be prime minister of this great country,” Truss began. “In particular, to lead the nation in mourning the death of Her Majesty the Queen.”

She went on to list some of her accomplishments, claiming that “in a short time this government acted with urgency and decision” to help working families.

“Since my time as prime minister, I am more convinced than ever that we need to be bold and rise to the challenge that we have,” she said.

Liz Truss’ cabinet of ministers was gathered outside the famous black door where the British head of government usually speaks. There was a last cabinet meeting at around 5 am Brasília time.

Defense of disastrous economic agenda

Liz Truss defended her disastrous economic agenda in her farewell speech, focusing on tax cuts and the presence of the state despite the chaos her fiscal plan caused.

Convoy of Liz Truss arrives at Buckingham Palace for meeting with King Charles III and formal resignation.

“We just can’t afford to be a low-growth country where the government takes an ever-increasing share of our national wealth,” Truss said.

“We need to leverage our Brexit freedoms to do things differently,” she continued. “That means offering more freedom to our citizens.”

“That means lower taxes so people can keep more of the money they make and that means generating growth,” Truss said.

Rishi Sunak is unlikely to have Truss’ advice in mind. He repeatedly warned that his economic plan would destroy markets over the summer, and it was quickly proven correct.

Ukraine support

Truss ended her final speech as prime minister with a plea for continued support for Ukraine.

“We must be able to overcome autocratic regimes where power is in the hands of a few,” Truss said. “And now, more than ever, we must support Ukraine in its courageous fight against Putin’s aggression.”

“Ukraine must prevail and we must continue to strengthen our nation’s defenses.”

Truss said she is looking forward to spending more time in her constituency.

And she concluded: “Our country is still fighting a storm, but I believe in Britain, I believe in the British people and I know better days are ahead.”
