Lizzo and the right to be themselves: «My body is art»

“The body debate is officially tired.” Thus begins the video published on social media (followed by over 25 million followers on TikTok and almost 13 million on Instagram) by the American pop star Lizzo, always at the forefront in the name of body positivity. In a bikini, on a beach, with her hair tied back, Lizzo reaffirmed the right to always be oneself. “I’ve seen comments go from, ‘I liked you when you were big. Why did you lose weight?”, “I liked your body before” to “You are so great. You absolutely have to lose weight, but for your health.”

Just scroll through Lizzo’s Instagram profile to relive the path taken by the American singer from the beginning of her career with photos and videos: loving your body, feeling free to be as you wish. “We’re fine? Don’t you feel the disappointment?”, Continues Lizzo in her social attack. «Do you realize that artists are not here to please your standards of beauty? Artists are here to make art and this body is art. I will do what I want with my body. I wish the comments cost you all the money you have so you can see how much time you’re wasting.”

A communicative and inner strength that Lizzo has reached step by step. And it hasn’t always been easy, from bullying at school to insults on the street, as she herself said in the cover interview given to Vanity Fair last October. «They’ve been calling me fat all my life. There are still girls and boys with an entire school talking about them: if they see me overcome it, maybe I can become a positive example». And she added: “My defense mechanism was humor. I became the class clown, I exhibited a certainty I didn’t have. I have that typical social anxiety, where the more stressed I am, the stronger and more fun I become.”
