Lizzo fulfilled a childhood dream on Monday (12).
The “About Damn Time” singer won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show for “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls,” an Amazon series that documented her search for backup dancers.
“When I was a kid, all I wanted was to see myself in the media: someone fat like me, black like me, pretty like me,” Lizzo said emotionally as she took the stage to accept the award. “If I could go back and say something to little Lizzo, I’d say, ‘You’re going to see this person, but damn it has to be you.”
Lizzo thanked the contestants on her series, adding, “This is for the ‘big ones’!”
Since her popularity exploded in 2019 with her single “Truth Hurts,” the Grammy winner has championed women of color, the LGBT community, and women of all sizes.
“Big Grrls” is a series in which Lizzo is shown selecting plus-size dancers for her upcoming tour. Several cast members were in attendance to see Lizzo receive the Emmy.
Lizzo has had a busy year: in the spring, she launched shapewear brand Yitty, which offers sizes from PP to XL. And in July, he released his long-awaited fourth album, “Special,” filled with anthems of self-love.
