João Vitor Romania it may be a relatively new name on TV or radio, but it is already a frequent figure on the internet. johnas he is known, accumulates thousands of views and fans on social networks, and gains more and more projection – not for nothing, with his 2021 album, “Pirata”, he was invited to perform at the Lollapalooza 2022.
The proof of growth is his new hit, “Idiota”: the song has already accumulated more than 170 thousand uses in Tik Tok videos – which means, that 170 thousand people have used the song as a backdrop for their songs -, and part of the 50 biggest virals in the world at the moment of Spotify.
To further leverage this success, the song won a clip in February, filled with references to movies with characters who “love like idiots”, matching the song’s chorus and its verses about heartbreak.
In it, John is Jack freezing at sea in “Titanic” (1997), Ennis with his lover in “Brokeback Mountain” (2005), Patrick singing Frankie Valli to his bitch in “10 Things I Hate About You” (1999) and “Peter Parker” kissing Mary Jane upside down.
“I always wanted to make a video that was more unpretentious, more fun, that I could ‘perform’ more, and these couples were born very related to music, to the situations that these films bring”, said the singer in an interview with CNNrevealing that he believes the song’s success comes from the universality of the experience of being heartbroken.
The strategy was to win the audience by the heart, and it worked: in just one day of launch, the video reached 1.2 million views on YouTube – today, there are almost 9 million views.
Jão also brought Brazilian references, and one gained prominence in the networks: he wore a racing suit and became Ayrton Senna, referring to the driver’s relationship with Xuxa. “It’s my favorite scene in the video,” he confessed.
The singer believes that all the repercussion is the result of a consistent work of growth done by him and his team, but says that “Idiota” was not planned just to bomb.
“I don’t think we ever make a song thinking it’s going to go viral, or a hit, because it never really works. There’s not much you can do to get people to make your music viral on Tik Tok, other than they like the music.”
With a viral hit and a light album in his backpack, Jão will step on stage at Lollapalooza for the first time. It is not the first festival that the artist performs, but it is the largest in terms of size.
“I was very happy, delighted [com o convite para tocar no Lolla], because it’s a festival that I like, that I consume. The artists that perform there are always so amazing, so being able to play on the main stage at Lolla for me is for sure one of the coolest moments of my career to date,” he said.
The singer, who has a tour planned for 2022, revealed that preparing to play a festival “is very different” than preparing for solo shows.
“It’s very different from touring, because I think it brings a load of winning over those people too, you know? Because part of who is there is not my audience. They may know me, but it’s not usually just my audience, so it gives my stomach butterflies,” he said, confessing that he is often nervous before big events.
Jão has already let the public know that he and his team are preparing a special show just for Lollapalooza, and that he is looking forward to the day.
