Lolla 2022: Remember five outstanding shows from this edition of the festival

The return of Lollapalooza Brasil for the first edition since the beginning of the pandemic took place with more than 70 attractions planned.

Even though some shows have been partially or completely canceled due to the rains and threats of lightning that hovered over the Interlagos Circuit, the public can witness remarkable moments with the performances of some of the most relevant national and international artists in music.

THE CNN separated below five shows that marked the last weekend and are worth the highlight.

Miley Cyrus

The best show of the three days of the festival. Extremely shaken by the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins, who was a close friend of hers, Miley even wrote on Twitter before the show that “her mind wanted to run away”.

“But my heart and soul would never leave Brazil without delivering the best show possible,” he added. In another post, she wrote: “I’m just feeling heartbroken and ‘human’ today. But I’m putting on my superhero costume and I’m going to be strong, not just for you, but for me!”

It was with this superhero energy that Miley took the stage on Saturday for the biggest audience day of the festival – 103,000 people. Tens of thousands of people screamed and jumped as she sang “We Can’t Stop”.

One of the most celebrated moments by the audience came in “Mother’s Daughter”, that the singer added to the set just because Brazilian fans put the song in the top 1 of iTunes.

She amended the end of the track by inviting Brazilian star Anitta to the stage. Spotify’s No. 1 Global Ranking Performed Her Song “Boys Don’t Cry” With Miley.

“I’m going to need to come to Brazil more often just to see Anitta”, said the American artist at another point in the show.

In a more emotional moment of the show, Miley pulled a chair to the front of the stage. Before she even started to speak, she couldn’t stop crying.

Then, the singer mourned the loss of Taylor Hawkins, “a legend and rock star”. “I want to send my most hopeful thoughts to the Foo Fighters family,” she added.

She told how, a few days ago, the plane on which she and the team were traveling to Paraguay was struck by lightning and had to land in an emergency.

Miley said the first person she called was Taylor because he was already in the country for the same festival. “I would do anything to be with him one more time,” she lamented.

The singer then dedicated the song “Angels Like You” to the drummer, who had a photo projected on the screens. The audience turned on cellphone flashlights to accompany Miley.

To end the presentation, she separated a trio of hits for everyone to leave without fault: “The Climb”, “Wrecking Ball” and “Party in the USA”.

Before leaving the stage, Miley still chose the end of her tour in South America to announce her next release. “Attention: Miley Live,” an album of live-recorded songs, will hit streaming platforms on April 1.

Tribute to Taylor Hawkins

At 8:30 pm this Sunday (27), Foo Fighters was scheduled to take the stage at Lollapalooza Brasil.

For the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins, the organization mounted a mega tribute, which involved testimonies, recordings of the last Foo Fighters show at Brazilian Lolla, in 2012, and a series of artistic presentations.

The tribute began with a video by Perry Farrell, lead singer of Jane’s Addiction and creator of Lollapalooza. Saying that Taylor was his best friend and one of the best drummers he’s ever known, Perry was moved to say he accepted the musician into his heart “because he was such a pure person.”

In another emotional moment, Perry’s wife Etty Lau Farrell shared the latest audio message she received from Taylor. “Take care of each other, and I’ll take care of myself. And I’ll see you in São Paulo. I love, love, love you. Sleep well,” the drummer told the couple.

In 2012, at the first edition of Lollapalooza in Brazil, Foo Fighters headlined the first night of the event. Organizers screened excerpts from that performance as part of the tribute.

Next, rapper Emicida led a series of performances that would be made as part of the celebration. The guest list was a kind of “all stars” of Brazilian hip hop: Mano Brown, Criolo, Bivolt, Drik Barbosa, Rael, KL Jay, Ice Blue and DJ Niack.

The tribute began with a cover of My Hero, sung by guitarist Michele Cordeiro, who is also part of Emicida’s band.

“Our hearts vibrate tonight and send our best energy to the Taylor family and the Foo Fighters family,” said Emicida.

The band Planet Hemp was also invited to participate in the tribute. On stage, Marcelo D2 regretted Taylor’s departure and recalled that the band went through the same.

In 1994, Planet Hemp’s then-vocalist Skunk died from complications caused by AIDS. “When you lose a band friend, you lose a piece of your dream,” said D2.

Marcelo D2 also took the opportunity to chorus the demonstrations seen throughout the day. Ironing the decision of the TSE, the musician said that, as he could not express himself, he would make a “tribute to Lolla”. He led the audience to sing “Olê, olê, olê, olá, Lolla, Lolla”, but everyone sang with the pronunciation referring to former President Lula (PT).

Throughout the set, Planet Hemp highlighted tributes “to all those who are gone”. Photos of artists such as Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Chico Science and Chorão were shown on the big screen. The band ended the show with their hit “Mantenha o Respeito”.

When everyone thought the night was over, the band Ego Kill Talent was invited to the stage. Responsible for the opening shows on the last visit of Foo Fighters in Brazil, the band played a cover of “Everlong”.

The festival actually ended with an emotional video of Foo Fighters performing “Best of You” at the 2012 show. The audience that stayed until the end sang as if the band were there.

djonga

The rapper from Minas Gerais Djonga can say that he left the festival with the record for criticism of President Jair Bolsonaro made on stage.

In front of a crowd that was waiting for him, he mocked the TSE’s decision on demonstrations, said he likes to disobey and cursed the president. “I hate Bolsonaro. Did they say he can’t talk? I will speak 22 times,” he said.

Djonga took advantage of most of the break between songs to make new reviews. “Bolsonaro is very weak”, he said, before starting to sing “We”. He even invited another artist from Minas to participate in the presentation. Owner of the hit “Se Tá Solteira”, FBC sang “Gelo”.

In the last song, “Olho de Tigre”, Djonga raised the audience, which was one of the biggest raised by a national artist at the event. He again made several speeches against President Bolsonaro and against racism.

The rapper stopped the song and shouted, “I want to know if Lollapalooza hates racists. Who hates racist raise your hand. Anyone who hates Bolsonaro raise your hand.”

He also stated that the phrase “fire on the racists” is the cry of his generation and called for attention to the anti-racist cause. “It is time for all of Brazil to hear this most important cry of all.”

Then Djonga came down from the stage and, in the middle of the audience, sang the lines “Sensação, sensational” with the crowd.

Pablo Vittar

If the biggest discussion of the weekend was about censorship and the decision of Minister Raul Araújo of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), it all started because drag Pabllo Vittar played one of the biggest shows on Friday (25) in Lolla.

The artist took the Adidas stage to reopen the festival’s lineup, after a sudden storm brought the festival to a complete halt. Making the whole audience dance in the middle of the mud, she opened the show with her hit “Buzina”.

“Thanks to everyone who didn’t leave despite the rain,” shouted Pabllo.

Accompanied by her group of dancers, the singer, who is also a confirmed attraction of the Coachella festival in the USA, made everyone sing from her oldest songs, to those of “Batidão Tropical”, her latest album.

Constantly positioning himself politically on social media, during the presentation Pabllo came down to the audience and waved a towel with the face of former President Lula (PT) – the trigger for the entire discussion at the TSE.

The artist also presented for the first time “Follow Me”, her latest release, recorded with Rina Sawayama. The show ended with the hit “KO”, but was partially hampered by a technical glitch, which left Pabllo’s microphone muted for a few seconds.

john

The national artist with the most elaborate presentation in terms of scenography was the 27-year-old São Paulo artist, Jão. The singer took the Onix stage, on Saturday afternoon, in the middle of a gigantic inflatable octopus, and performed for the biggest audience of the day, until that moment.

He had already told CNN that he wanted to conquer even those who didn’t know him, and the task can be considered successful.

His main songs, such as “Vou Morrer Sozinho”, and “Idiota”, for example, had a crowd jumping following the satin-clad singer. Jão said that he went to Lollapalooza in 2017 to watch Canadian singer The Weeknd perform, and since then he dreamed of performing at the festival.

The artist also endorsed the screams against President Bolsonaro that emerged between the songs. Pointing out that his audience, for the most part, is between 16 and 17 years old, the artist encouraged everyone to get a voter registration card. The deadline ends on May 4th. “It’s no use shouting and not voting,” said Jão.

He ended the performance with his TikTok hit “Idiot”.

Surprise for some and a desperately awaited moment for another part of the audience, those who left the stage after Jão’s show told the CNN unanimously that it was one of the best moments of Saturday.
