Lolla 2022: Remi Wolf arrives in Brazil to show his frenetic Californian pop

With irreverent lyrics and psychedelicly frenetic clips, the American singer Remi Wolf It didn’t take long to win over the social media audience. With only one studio album released, she already has more than 3 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

The originality of the songs overflows in the artist’s way of being. Wolf’s way of speaking, colorful and full of details, and posts on Wolf’s networks show his peculiar way of seeing the world.

In an interview with CNN, wearing her knitted cap in fluorescent colors, Remi explained that her personal style has always been part of her personality. “I’ve dressed this way all my life. I’ve always taken a risk and I love a lot of colors and prints”, she said, while still trying to wake up – there are four hours of time difference between São Paulo and California.

“I’ve never cared about other people’s opinions about keeping my style, so I’ve been that way for a lot longer than my music career,” he added.

At 26 years old, Remi says she has been performing for 15 years – including, in 2017, the Californian from Palo Alto participated in the traditional reality show “American Idol”.

His songs have traces of disco, soul, funk and R&B, and he is often referred to by critics in the US and UK as part of the “hyper pop” movement – ​​which, as the name implies, is characterized by the exaggeration of elements that are usually be part of popular music – despite the singer denying the label.

Everything about Remi is relaxed. In one of her most recently released songs, “Sexy Villain”, she makes references to less beloved characters in the collective imagination, such as serial killers and villains – in one of the verses she even defines herself as Robert De Niro from the American West Coast.

The track is part of her first studio album, “Juno”, released in 2021. The name is a tribute to Juno Jameson Wolf, the French bulldog and Remi’s biggest darling, who was adopted in 2020 despite the singer being allergic to dogs.

“I usually write my songs very quickly (…) I follow the portals that open in my mind and try not to think twice. If I start questioning, creativity stops, so I just let it flow as much as I can”, she said, about the process of creating the compilation, made in partnership with producer Jared Solomon, better known by the name Solomonophonic on stage.

“I like to express emotions with my voice. You can listen to different songs and realize that I’m using almost completely different characters to portray the lyrics, and I think that’s part of my writing as well.”

Remi Wolf arrives in Brazil for the first time to liven up the stage of Lollapalooza Brazilwhich takes place at the Interlagos Circuit, in São Paulo, between March 25th and 27th, and said that “she has never been so excited to go somewhere” as she is now.

“Juno” was released at a time of the pandemic when music events had not yet resumed. In the last few months, she was finally able to perform live the songs she made during this period, but only in the United States.

“I want to play this show, and then go out and be a tourist in Brazil! I feel like I never have the opportunity to do that”, says Remi, who will be in Brazil for three days.

She reported that it will be a challenge to perform for such a different audience than usual, and that she has had little contact with fans of her music abroad.

Despite not speaking Portuguese, Remi feels she is ready to face the festival, cheer up the Brazilian public and eat cheese bread. Not necessarily in that order.
