While around 300,000 people have fun at Lollapalooza Brasil over this weekend in São Paulo, a selective collection cooperative takes care of dealing with the tons of recyclable waste that is generated.
The head of ESG at T4F, Monique Viana, estimated CNN that up to 99 tons of recyclables should be generated throughout the festival.
For this reason, a partnership was signed with the Coopercaps cooperative, which since early this Saturday (25th) has been working so that this waste returns to the industry as raw material.
The commercial director of Coopercaps, Marcos Paulo Nascimento, explained to CNN that the cooperative already has experience working in large events, such as the Formula 1 races, at the Autódromo, or the series of six Coldplay concerts at the Morumbi stadium – when they collected almost 40 tons of waste.
At Lollapalooza, there are around 90 cooperative members working: 60 at the festival and another 30 at the Coopercaps CRCC unit, in the Jurubatuba neighborhood, next to Interlagos.
“Waste collection logistics have to be done at dawn, and then our cooperative members work throughout the day to avoid accumulating waste,” he explained.
In the cooperative, the materials are analyzed in a cooperative work on a large conveyor belt so that what is commercially viable for the cooperative is separated.
Their expectation is that they will be able to collect and sell to companies, such as, for example, Coca-Cola and Braskem, an amount similar to what was collected with Coldplay.

“It was agreed with Braskem that all PP cups will return to the company, and with Coca-Cola the return of pet bottles”, he added.
Marcos highlighted the importance of the cooperative’s participation in this event: “Most of our cooperative members live here in the region. We did a study that showed that, in initiatives like this one, around 70% of the income that the cooperative members receive stays in the community. It is reinserted into the local economy.”
The initiative for the partnership with Coopercaps came from the guidance of Casa Causa, a consultancy contracted by Lollapalooza to coordinate the management of recyclable, waste and organic waste generated at the event.
“No waste generated at the event goes to the landfill. Recyclable materials go to a recyclable material cooperative. The organics will be composted and turned into fertilizer [pela empresa AgroDKV, de Campinas]. Other residues that are rejects will have their energy reuse through burning in industrial furnaces [pela empresa Silcon]”, he explained to CNN the project leader, Flávia Cunha.
