Prices for hotels in London and airfares to the British capital are rising as hundreds of thousands of people travel to the city ahead of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral on Monday, providing some relief to local tourism. in the midst of economic problems.

The race for accommodations comes as tourists visit the capital to pay their respects and with foreign delegations arriving for the funeral on September 19, which will attract large numbers of people.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to pass through the casket which will be open to the public 24 hours a day between Wednesday night and the start of the funeral day.

The average prices for a round-trip flight from the United States to London departing September 15, 16 and 17 were $1,120, $1,054 and $967, respectively, Hopper data showed.

That compares to an average price for a transatlantic round trip of $710.

Travel growth as pandemic restrictions eased has pushed hotel rates to record levels, according to data from analytics firm STR.

Britons also spent big on celebrations to commemorate Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee over a four-day weekend in June.

A weaker pound is also attracting people from abroad, and the influx could boost restaurants, pubs and museums still reeling from the pandemic crisis and with record levels of inflation.
