London imposes new sanctions on Russian airlines

Britain announced today that it is introducing new sanctions against the Russian aviation industry in order to prevent Aeroflot, Ural Airlines and Rossiya Airlines from selling unused landing crates at British airports.

The British government has announced that it estimates that the landing crates are worth εκα 50 million ($ 61.9 million).

“We have already closed our airspace to Russian airlines. Today we ensure that they will not be able to take advantage of the lucrative landing boxes at our airports,” British Foreign Secretary Liz Tras said in a statement.

“Any economic sanctions reinforce our clear message to (Russian President Vladimir Putin) – we will not stop until Ukraine prevails.”

Britain says Aeroflot, Russia’s largest state-owned airline, offers services to the Russian government and contributes revenue to the Kremlin. London has already imposed sanctions on the company’s CEO.

Rossiya Airlines is a subsidiary of Aeroflot, while Ural Airlines is privately owned. All three companies are now subject to ‘freezing’ of their assets.
