British police have confiscated more than £ 180 million (about $ 250 million) cryptocurrency. This is the largest seizure of its kind in British history and one of the largest in the world.
According to a statement on the website of the London Metropolitan Police Service, responsible for maintaining public order in the Greater London area excluding the City, law enforcement officers have confiscated almost £ 180 million in cryptocurrency, surpassing the previous record set by the police just a few weeks ago.
This seizure is one of the largest in the world and exceeds the amount of the seizure by £ 114 million (about $ 158 million) made by the London police on June 24. The seizures were carried out by an ECCE detective based on intelligence data on the transfer of criminal assets. The police acted as part of an international money laundering investigation.
According to law enforcement officers, the 39-year-old woman was arrested on June 24 on suspicion of money laundering and was soon released on bail. On July 10, the police interrogated her again. As a result, £ 180 million of criminal proceeds in cryptocurrency were seized. The investigation is ongoing. Criminal Police Constable Joe Ryan said:
“Less than a month ago, we successfully confiscated £ 114 million in cryptocurrency. Since then, our investigation has become even more complex and versatile. We worked hard to track this money and identify criminals with whom it may be associated. Today’s arrest is another important milestone in this investigation, which will continue for several months as we identify the central figures of this money laundering operation. ”
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Graham McNulty noted that the proceeds of crime are laundered in a variety of ways. While cash is still the preferred tool among criminals, as digital platforms evolve, the police are increasingly detecting organized criminals using cryptocurrency to launder money.
“Whereas a few years ago it was rather unexplored territory, now we have well-trained officers and specialized units working hard in this area to stay one step ahead of those who use cryptocurrency for illegal profit,” McNulty said.
Recall that at the beginning of the month, the Israeli authorities confiscated cryptocurrency wallets associated with the Hamas movement, and the Prosecutor General of Russia Igor Krasnov spoke about the work on amendments to the legislation allowing the confiscation of digital assets that were used for illegal purposes.
