Britain is proposing a new law requiring social media companies to proactively deal with disinformation promoted by foreign countries such as Russia, the British government announced yesterday.
The law will apply to fake accounts created by foreign countries on social media platforms such as Meta’s Facebook and Twitter, with the aim of influencing elections or court proceedings, according to the government.
The law is expected to be passed during the current parliamentary term through an amendment linking the National Security Bill with the Internet Security Bill. The two bills have been included in the government program for the current parliamentary term.
Telecoms regulator Ofcom will draw up a code of practice to help social media companies comply with the new law, and will have the power to impose fines for breaches of the law. .
Digital Policy Minister Nadine Dorries said yesterday that the invasion of Ukraine has shown that Russia is using social media, but also that it is lying about its actions.
