The body found in a forest outside London belongs to 33-year-old Sarah Everard, who went missing last week, as announced today Friday (12/3) by the British police.
According to the APE-MPE, Everard disappeared while returning home on foot after visiting a friend of hers, in south London, last Wednesday and police arrested an acting police officer, against whom there are suspicions that he kidnapped and killed her. The disappearance caused anger and fear among women regarding their safety.
Her case has flooded the internet with testimonies from women about personal experiences and fears of walking the streets alone at night.
Police found a corpse in the woods two days ago, with London Deputy Police Chief Nick Eggrave confirms that it belongs to the missing 33-year-old.
“I know people are hurting and outraged by what has happened, and these are feelings that I personally share,” Epgrave said in a statement outside the London Police Department building.
“I also recognize the broader concerns that are rightly raised about the safety of women in public places in London and elsewhere.”
Prior to the official identification of the body, the Everard family paid tribute to the “beautiful daughter Sarah” and appealed for help in resolving “this terrible crime”.
“I will do everything I can to protect women”
For her part, British Home Secretary Pretty Patel assured that she would do everything she could to protect women and girls after the outcry following the 33-year-old’s disappearance.
“Every woman and girl should be free to walk our streets without the slightest fear of harassment, abuse or violence,” the British minister wrote on Twitter.
With Sarah & her family in my thoughts and prayers, I will continue to do all I can in my role as Home Secretary to protect women & girls.

However, police were criticized by the organizers of a planned vigil tomorrow, near the place where Everard was last seen, which authorities warn will be illegal given the restrictions against Covid-19.
