Long Covid, all symptoms that last over time

A kind of second disease after recovery: this is how many patients describe what we now know as Long Covid or Sindrome Post Covid-19.

A real clinical condition, characterized by failure to return to the state of health prior to the infection, with symptoms and disorders of various types that they can negatively affect the quality of life if not a very serious health problem. The persistence of symptoms, sometimes very disabling, can make it difficult to return to work, but also have a significant impact on their health, especially for older people.

the causes and underlying mechanisms of Long Covid are not yet fully clear: some studies seem to support it the hypothesis of organ damage caused by the virus, while other research speculates that the cause can be traced to an abnormality of the immune response.

Long Covid: Women are more at risk

Just as the reasons why only some patients develop Long Covid. The only evidence, according to the data provided by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, is that there are risk factors such asold age and the sex.

the women in fact, who – according to what emerged from the beginning of the pandemic – tend to get sick less from Covid-19 than men, as they develop a better immune response, nevertheless seem to be more at risk to develop long-term symptoms of Long Covid, with an incidence of about double compared to men inage between 40 and 50 years.

Also children, albeit in rare cases, they do not seem to be spared from this post-infection clinical condition: fever, gastrointestinal disturbances but also fatigue and even dysfunction cognitive, may be persistent symptoms after recovery even in the smallest, which is why experts recommend vaccination even in the 5-11 year old range.

Not only that, according to what has emerged to date the onset of symptoms and their persistence non it would seem to be related to intensity of the same during the illness: this means that even people who have contracted the infection in a mild way they can actually develop long-term problems.

As regards the incidence of Long Covid, it still seems difficult to be able to make precise estimates: according to a document from last JulyWorld Health Organization, a quarter of the subjects with Covid-19 manifest symptoms that last over time after 4-5 weeks from the detection of positivity.

Long Covid: how does it manifest itself?

The ISS report “Interim indications on the management principles of Long-COVID”, points out how the clinical manifestations of Long Covid are in reality very variable and that the symptoms can appear both individually and in different combinations, as well as being transient or constant or change their nature over time.

Despite the doubts still to be clarified, to date, however, we know that the Long Covid can manifest itself with a series of particular symptoms. Here are the main ones.
